bimodal distribution
If I got Dr. Solms' remarks correctly, the idea put forth was that the two modes in the bimodal distribution may represent people at different stages of the bereavement process -- one group still protesting the loss, the other group further along in the process toward acceptance of the loss. The first group is still hypercathecting and the second group is disengaging. Along those lines, I wonder if we're seeing mixtures of emotions -- sadness mixed with anger in the protest group and sadness mixed with acceptance or resignation in the second group. I know acceptance and resignation are not discrete emotions. Perhaps that may be pure sadness where the first group is sadness mixed with anger; I'm sure there are other hypotheses. And I wonder if the methodology is sophisticated enough yet to identify a mixture of emotions. Some other thoughts in support of this idea: the American Idol girl certainly showed anger mixed with her sadness at first (as pointed out by a member of the audience Saturday); Kubler-Ross's stages of grief has anger as one of the early stages, and acceptance as the final stage. I'd be interested in your response to my thoughts.
